Suppression effort underway in Virginia
Tim Daly from Clarendon got a call saying that if he votes Tuesday, he will be arrested. A recording of his voicemail can be found online at
www.webbforsenate.com/media/phone_message.wavThe transcript from his voicemail reads:
"This message is for Timothy Daly. This is the Virginia Elections Commission. We've determined you are registered in New York to vote. Therefore, you will not be allowed to cast your vote on Tuesday. If you do show up, you will be charged criminally."
Daly has been registered to vote in Virginia since 1998, and he has voted for the last several cycles with no problem. He has filed a criminal complaint with the Commonwealth's attorney in Arlington.
There are also widespread calls falsely informing voters that their polling places have changed location, and some voting machine problems which cut Jim Webb's name off the ballot.
Update: The VA Secretary of State has issued a statement about the suppression efforts. And the Webb campaign has filed a complaint with the Department of Justice.
Second update: And it looks like the GOP is ignoring a court order in Missouri.
Third update: Mailer fraud in Maryland - apparently several major black leaders endorsed the Republican senate candidate - only they didn't.
As I said, if you come across anything, let me know.
The notice warned that anyone who was an illegal alien OR an immigrant and who voted would be imprisoned and deported.
The problem? Well, for one thing, immigrants who have become naturalized American citizens have every bit as much right to vote as any other American.
Republicans and others are jumping through hoops to "prove" they weren't trying to prevent naturalized American citizens from voting, in the style of the KKK during and after Reconstruction.
They say the Nguyen campaign was justified in sending the warnings because Republicans say illegal aliens voted in the last election that put Rep. Sanchez into office in place of former Rep. Dornan.
Well, not the last election. That was 1992 I believe. And in 14 years I don't think they've come up with a single name of an illegal who voted. They supposedly had a list, but it seems to have gone the way of McCarthy's list of 200 subversives in the Pentagon.
anon 9:43 - and I believe Kos is on Larry King tonight talking about the same thing. I think they have a Power Point or LGF guy to speak for conservative bloggers.
It still ticks me off, though.
