Carlson Wireless lands a business development loan
As most of you know, Sohum lost Carlson Wireless to Arcata recently - Arcata being the industrial and entrepeneurial center of the county as Hank Sims pointed out a few months back. Carlson left citing limitations in infrastructure and particularly skilled labor pool in Sohum. His "mission" has been to develop communication technology for rural areas such as ours which exist off the communications grid. Apparently he's made significant developments in what are termed "fixed-point broadband DSSS/TDMA systems," which I assume basically means a cell phone that functions as a household phone.
Well, Carlson has bagged a loan from the Economic Development Committee (EDC) in the amount of 175 grand.
Jim Carlson has been a client of mine and he's a great guy with extensive community involvement. Obviously it won't be popular with some people, but he lent his business office to the Gallegos and Measure T campaigns for phone banking last spring (I was in an awkward position when I volunteered because I supported Gallegos but opposed Measure T). He was also very much involved in local charitable endeavors.
Good for him, and Arcata.

I'll second your motion that Jim is a "great guy". What is disturbing is that Jim was not offering a minimum wage job nor was it "MacDonalds" style employment without chance of upward movement, and it is exciting work in that it involves some cutting edge technology whose growth potential seems limitless. We have a skilled labor pool in SoHum, just not a "willing" one.
I wish him the best. Arcada's gain and our loss.

You say: "Arcata being the industrial and entrepeneurial center of the county as Hank Sims pointed out a few months back."
That is because manufacturers want cheap college labor. The labor is educated, but works for relatively low pay. What attracts the manufacturers, therefore, is the state subsidized university. Another attraction is the left over commercial space from the bygone timber industry.

Actually most of the people he's hired so far, to my knowledge, are either graduates, middle-aged transplants, or former employees of other businesses. The key point is that they are experienced and want to work. They won't leave at harvest time or when it's time to vacation in Jamaica.
Soon the jihad will begin. Tad and the homeless socialist/progressives will be filing suit in federal court to force this new business to allow them to continue sleeping (and defecating) on the covered back porch.
"Capitalism be dammed, we'll sleep where ever we want!"
Tad Robinson-2005
Give it a few months; this place will be empty again, chased away by the entitlement crowd.

As a NoHum person (Trinidad resident) I really wish we would stop the SoHum/NoHum disputes. When you look at all the disharmony and dysfunction of Iraq and the mid-East now, why can't we all just GET ALONG???
We should celebrate the success of ALL Humboldt businesses, especially when they're competing on the national and international scene.
My feeling - best of luck to Jim & Carlson Wireless and may they bring all the prosperity they can to our region! Just stay IN HUMBOLDT and don't relocate to Mexico!
