Bummer
I was in Eureka today and wanted to buy a birthday present for my wife. I ventured into Old Town and found that Gallery Dog is gone? Are they out of business or did they move somewhere? Over the past few years they'd made a few gift shopping bucks off of me. Guess not too many others.

I'm sure it's quite simple, Eric: Marina Center.
Just like so many businesses that have gone under in Eureka already, and those many that will fall in the future, just the thought of a Marina Center- never mind Home Depot- scares the beejeebers out of people and away they go!

Gallery Dog closed their doors last autumn, as I recall. Yes, I too liked their selection and their ambiance. But there are many lovely places to buy interesting things for your wife locally: the Mateel Arts Coop; Persimmon's Gallery, Folk Arts, the Blue Moon, the Eagle's Perch...Chautauqua ( has some intriguing things in and amongst the food goodies. The little florist next door has some lovely treasures. I noticed that at the coffee place next to Dazey's they have some trinkets that are really pretty. There's the bead place where there are nice and unusual things-Garden of Beadin; All Sports--is that the name? has nice active inspirations. Hey, so does Browns for that matter. The Bootleg has sturdy clothing, maybe not so romantic, but warm. Always the Thrift Store for good finds and helping the critters. True Value always has...well, they have candy, and sporting goods, and maybe your wife needs new...um, garden gloves? Which brings to mind the Feed Store here in Redway; how about some love birds? Or a tree? Or a rosebush? (which of course brings us back to Dazeys, where I fell in love with one of the garden statues the other day)(it was very pretty). Special coffee goodies at Signature? Vegan chocolates from Shop Smart? Dinner out at any of the nice restaurants in G'ville or Redway? (now, all you shops I've forgotten to list--oh, yeah, there are some really cool clothing shops in G'ville--beyond my budget, I think, but your wife is worth it, right---anyway, please know, dear forgotten shops, the omissions were not intentional.

The bigger the store, the greater the buying power, generally means the lower the price. So, yes, 12:27 am, Chautauqua costs more than Eureka Natural Foods or the Co-Op, but I doubt that Folk Art prices are twice as high as Gallery Dog's were. And anyway, consider the cost of travel to Eureka (and the waste of resources to do so), the value of your time getting there and back(2++ hours), and the importance of patronizing our local stores so they'll be there when we really need them for that last-minute gift, or when we're too weary to make the trip. That "bargain" gift isn't such a bargain after all when all costs are factored in.

Fred ..7:35...That has to be among the dumbest things ever posted here. The threat of competition chasing businesses away. Absurd. Very few niche businesses can support themselves in this depressed area, It has nothing to do with the Marina center.

The Eagles Perch has beautiful gifts! (I've noticed my husband has been frequenting them for gifts lately) He got me a wonderful hummingbird stained glass piece for my office window.
As for Folk Art- There is certainly nice stuff in there, but I think it's overpriced and I liked the variety that Anne used to have and no longer does...

I've lived in Sohum for 12 years, and bought many a present at each of those places. Things do tend to be more expensive down here. It's often a better deal factoring in gas in travel but I happened to be in Eureka yesterday anyway. Gallery Dog had great prices on a Ferndale-based jeweler Jana particularly loves.

Hey, I could never find my way out of my closet (I'm 9:54); too crowded with stuff I'm going to use someday.
I realized I forgot Ernie's place. Bad me. Besides the electronic stuff that confuses me, he has some rather elegant wares in the small room. Jewelry too.
When you shop locally you are building up your own community. And besides, it's fun. And if you are clueless about what the person you are shopping for likes, you can ask your fellow shoppers. Round Christmas time I got a lot of help from people. "Hey, what would so and so enjoy?" "well, I'm getting him and thus and such, but he also said he wanted one of those gadgets over there". "How about her?" "Oh, she likes that pink sweater that's over in that shop".

Eureka has its share of high priced retailers. Two that come to mind are Piersons and Greystone Jewelers. These folks ought to be ashamed. Went to Piersons last week and saw a light fixture that was exactly twice what I ended up paying at True Value. But gee they have those folksy down home ads.
