Press release from Clif Clendenen

February 21, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Clendenen Goes Door-to-Door to Meet Constituents

Humboldt County Second District Supervisor candidate Clif Clendenen has begun walking neighborhoods in Fortuna, going door-to-door to talk with area residents about the focus of his campaign. As part of his commitment to be accessible and approachable, Clendenen would like to meet with as many of his constituents as possible by walking neighborhoods in Fortuna, Hydesville, Rio Dell, Scotia, Garberville and Redway.

Clendenen can be found going door-to-door in neighborhoods from 4 to 7 p.m. on many weekdays and on most weekends. His goal is to be able to personally meet as many Second District voters as possible. In order to better meet voters in more rural areas of the district, Clendenen has held meetings recently in Garberville and Miranda, with the next set for Weott on Thursday, March 13 from 6 to 8 p.m., as well as participating in house party events such as the one recently held at the home of Sal and Naomi Steinberg in Carlotta, with others set for the upcoming weeks.

"I'm looking forward to the chance to talk one-on-one with as many people as possible," Clendenen said. "Between now and the election I think it's absolutely vital to meet with people on their doorsteps and in their living rooms so I can listen to everything they have to say.

"Being able to communicate in this way is something I've learned from my years as a business owner and as a resident of this community, and it reflects the way I'll serve the people -- being part of an open, responsive and efficient government, which is something we need now more than ever."

Clendenen, for the past 30 years the owner of his family business Clendenen's Cider Works, helped develop the Fortuna Apple Harvest Festival, is a former board member of the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce and is the founding president of the Fortuna Concert Series. He is also a past director of the Humboldt County Farm Bureau. Clendenen has been actively involved in Fortuna's General Plan Update, advocating for responsible growth that will preserve the city's small-town character and foster sound economic development and diversification.

....

Re the photo: Clif Clendenen recently began walking the neighborhoods of Fortuna, and is pictured here at the home of Jimmie Ballenger. Pictured clockwise with Clendenen are Jimmie Ballinger, Virginia Anderson, Margaret Rodrique, Mary Carroll and Lola Harland.

Comments:
All fine and good, but is he visiting any fire depts?

Naomi writes Clif's stuff. Why doesn't she just run for supe herself?

She's a Rabbi. Rabbit. Something like that.

Actually, I don't think it is Naomi writing this stuff, though I know she's an enthusiastic supporter.
Maybe after Estelle's debut next Wednesday we'll begin to get a sense of how these two stack up as potential supes.

She's a Rabbi. Rabbit. Something like that.

The word is "Rabbi." It means "great teacher." And she has worked very hard to be a good one.

Naomi's husband, Sal ran against Roger during the last election. Roger won.

Rabbi means "my master" which is why Jesus told us Christians to not use the term. It's the Jewish carryover from their lost Hindu Vedic time as Brahmins with the Brahmin ideology that they are the masters of humanity and closer to God than anyone else.

Actually, it means "teacher" and literally "great one."

From Wikipedia

Rabbi, in Judaism, means a religious ‘teacher’, or more literally, ‘great one’. The word Rabbi is derived from the Hebrew root word רַב, rav, which in biblical Hebrew means ‘great’ or ‘distinguished (in knowledge)’. Sephardic and Yemenite Jews pronounce this word רִבִּי ribbī; the modern Israeli pronunciation רַבִּי rabbī is derived from a recent (18th century) innovation in Ashkenazic prayer books, although this vocalization is also found in some ancient sources. Other varieties of pronunciation are rəvī, rubbī,[citation needed] and, in Yiddish, rebbə.

The word comes from the Semitic root R-B-B, and is cognate to Arabic ربّ rabb, meaning "lord" (generally used when talking about God, but also about temporal lords as well).

Let me try that sans italicization.

Much better than the boxes.

“Moreh” or “Morah” (male or female) means teacher.

Rabbi means "my great master" and like I said, is derived from the Brahmin idea that a class of people are closer to God and thus higher in status than everyone else. It was the root idea of the Hindu caste system which seems to have made its way from India between 3000 to 2000 BC to the Near East showing up as sons of "Abraham", i.e., Brahma, with Brahma's consort Sarasvati showing up as Sarah.

To see how this idea of a master race plays out in Israel, read my latest blog entry.

Who's got a rabbit in this race?

Glad to see Clif out there pounding the pavement. That is how Richard Marks got my vote a while back. A house visit by a candidate can be very persuasive.

Great. Fabulous. Since he won’t be coming to my house maybe he can put out a press release explaining what he is going to do about things that matter to me. Things that Rodoni has refused to deal with for almost 12 years and maybe Estelle is thinking about. Things like the god damn roads down here!! Things like the trash problem. And the Post Office problem. What are his ideas about getting someplace to pee in Redway? And Garbervbille! We need roads that will not blow out tires as you drive putter around. Did you read that? WE HAVE ROADS THAT BLOW OUT TIRES!!!! Roads that are traveled by thousands of autos a day. What is going to be done? This is a serious problem. What are they going to do if AAA puts out a warning not to travel to Shelter Cove because the roads are so bad. Or maybe “Be very cautious about traveling to Humboldt County because the roads are so bad.” Is that what it is going to take?

Why is this a press release? Did either newspaper actually print it?

Rabbi. Rabbit. It is tongue in cheek everyone but glad it got a conversation started.

anon 7:53
Is that the only problem you have with driving the Shelter Cove Road - potholes?
What about the Tundra road racers on everyone's tailgate? Shouldn't AAA warn the unsuspecting about those A-holes as well?

Since you didn't mention them maybe it's because you're one of them, which may explain why you have so many blowouts. Slow down, cowboy, your tires, and the rest of us, will survive longer.

How about a "Name That Picture" contest?

Fruitcake anyone?

I have had 5 - yes (duh!) five separate blow-outs between Redway and Shelter Cove in the last month. You probably have my vote anyway Clif - but if you address our road problem the deal is sealed! I was thinking today while in town looking at notices of places you are making yourself available how grass roots and available it makes you seem. Makes one think "If he has this much energy to communicate now he will be a powerhouse when he gets doen to the job of doing the job.

Thanks Clif!

When is Estelle going to do something besides give press conferences at the fire house?

8:54 PM
I do drive the Shelter Cove Road but you have me confused with somebody else. I am one of the ones who get passed by three or four Ford 250 Super Duty pickups on every trip[. Yes AAA would be wise to warn about that as well. Just because I don’t like the shitty road and have had a blowout does not mean I am one of the idiots. I also know of others who have had blowouts. I surely hope you are not saying that the roads are of no concern because in your mind the only people getting blowouts deserve it. When some old lady or old man goes off the road because they are swerving to avoid a pothole or a blowout then maybe your friend Rodoni will get the road fixed. I like the idea about getting AAA involved in this.

Yeah, it does look like Estelle is patterning her campaign off of 9u11iani's.
Can we say; Canoe Fire Fennell!

Worked well for him, didn't it?

Smart move. Not only is it good exercise, pounding the pavement for votes seems to be quite effective in small districts like ours. But to paraphrase John Dillenger, pols walk in those towns because that's where the votes are.

If Naomi is backing Clif his chances of winning are substantially improved.

The election will occur primarily in Fortuna, Scotia, and Rio Dell and surrounds. That's why we wanted a new county way back in history. But that's history. Those towns are Roger's home base, and Sohum candidates like Estells have got to get serious numbers of votes there to have a chance.

As a supporter of Estelle I can tell you that we are running to oust Rodoni. The campaign will not be bad mouthing Clif. It is important that Clif erodes Rodonis base in Fortuna. Estelle also has been getting support from the northern areas. It is still early in the cycle so there is no need to sniping at the challengers. Roger has called his fellow board member a whore and alienated county staff assuring that there will be little consideration for the needs of this district.

Do we suspect that Rodoni is keeping Fortuna roads in shape and letting SoHum suffer? If that were so, it could be a huge campaign issue.

Not in Fortuna

Well Gramps, Fortuna's roads are maintained by the city not the county; furthermore, if you have some problems with some of the county roads down there, contact public works, not the bos - its the job of the bos to make policy not fix the roads.

If the public works dept is not responsive, THEN, show up at a bos meeting and bring it to the entire board's attention.

anon 8:32

Well, it's a dead give-away,("we"?), that this particular anon is a member of Fennell's campaign staff, but doesn't not want to identify him/herself.
That's helpful.

I wouldn't believe that Clif's campaign would be "bad mouthing" Estelle either. So what?

Rodoni's the incumbent, which means it's incumbent upon the challenger(s), to more than bad mouth Rodoni. They need to offer solutions too.

Again, with the crisis state budget woes that's going to be extremely difficult, if not down right impossible.
You can't fill potholes with rhetoric, it takes money.

Anyone for raising taxes?

I thought not.

Roger Rodoni on KMUD a week ago blamed the homeless/transient citizens in the Garberville area for the trash problem on the Eel River, and said he would do nothing about the problem because local people brought it on themselves by allowing homeless to “infest” the area.

The next day I drove from Crab Park at the mouth of the Eel to Rio Dell and stopped where I could on both sides of the river. Typical garbage included construction building waste, computer monitors, printer, vacuum cleaners, clothes dryer, hot water and on...there was some bedding and trash one would associate with the homeless, but most was clearly dumped by local residents to avoid tipping fees. This must also be at least part of the problem trash in the Garberville area.

What is remarkable, besides Roger’s blatant bigotry by scapegoating the most powerless and victimized group of people, is that all of the garbage I could find was very recent. Cleanup was done regularly on county, state and private land, and one could believe that roads in the SoHum area may not be as well maintained for the same ideological reasons.

Keeping tires inflated to max+ pressure may help stop blowouts.

Rodoni = 0
Clendenen = words
Fennell = accomplishment

Oh, please, please don't say "she'll be ready on day 1!"

Estelle - Accomplished what? I'm serious. Please list her accomplishments. Any... Some... One... I know Estelle and like her but she seems to be MIA since her KMUD gig ended. Behind the scenes doesn't win an election.

There's an article in the ER about statements made by Rodoni and Fennell on the Palco bankrupcy.
For some reason her campaign didn't alert you to it.
One can only wonder why.

Please everyone! The election is still more than 3 months away, and a lot of this early campaigning is going to get pretty stale.

Estelles many accomplishments have helped me greatly, and have directly given me considerable knowledge of local 'supervisorial' types of issues. It is her professional ability to interview and dig for the important and relevant issues, and she has done this many times over the last 17 years. It is her energy, good will, and ability that has kept her up late at night, all night, and early in the morning to give health and safety information, and to give election news...she accomplished this many times over the last 17 years.

If she took a year off for vacation she would deserve it, so give her a break, and unclog your ears. I understand that she has already been acting as a de facto supervisor by making a sincere effort to get county involvement with the Eel River cleanup.

Some comments about recent posts:
I hope Estelle does not wait until May to start a real campaign. I also hope she starts to offer solutions. If Rodoni starts offering solutions it will not matter to me. It’s too late.

10:55
If I don’t like the roads down here and feel I should contact the Supervisor in charge of my district. He is the SUPERVISOR and the go between me and other county departments. Obviously he feels the same way as you so I will never vote for him and will work very hard against him. His job is to supervise not tell me why he doesn’t care.
Rodoni’s words are as relevant in Fortuna as they are in So Hum. He is a “No I can’t” kind of guy.
Eric, let’s hope Cliff does not try to use anybody else’s words or we may have another Xerox moment.
3:58
I am willing to hear what her plans are. It’s not like she is running for President and has to show me how she ended the war in Kosavo before I can vote for her. Just let me know what she is going to do. If it is unreasonable I will decide. Same with Cliff. One of them will get my vote. Rodoni has shown me he does not give a shit about me. For 12 years!!!

5:17
Fine, but she better hit the ground running. And not too late. Remember how well it worked for Giulliani.

Just what the county needs, another good old boy.

Ed, it wasn't Dillinger, it was Willie Sutton. Although he supposedly denied saying it but said it was the sort of thing he might have said.

Don't tell me Ed is wrong again. Say it aint so.

Uh, Estelle announced that she would be running for Supe more than 3 months ago. [11/12/07] Since then, just a few sound bytes from her handlers here and some odd parrying with Rodoni in the Eureka Reporter over the MRC deal. And it looked like Rodoni got the better of that exchange, btw. So much for taking all this time to "study the issues".

The only way her, or anyone's candidacy, can get stale is if there isn't much substance to it to begin with.

And, contrary to all the claims, I found that some of Estelle's interviews/news coverage on KMUD as news director were not all that impressive. Too much time spent on minutia, which tended to drift off subject, and questions of real substance or challenge, that might not have been popular to raise because of the august SoHum personalities involved, went unasked. Estelle can fawn with the best of them.

Will she be listing her experience as a parking coordinator for PP in her candidate's resume'?

I bow to the collective wisdom. Please revise my posting to say "To paraphrase someone who was not Willie Sutton....." BTW no one has yet noticed that I misspelled Dillinger's name.

Now, lets move on. I think Clif is making a smart move to start his door-to-door (DtD) campaigning now. He's already got the home town advantage.
Undoubtedly there are a good number of voters are who now undecided. In my experience people who are undecided will one day decide on a candidate and after that its hard to budge them. Which day they'll make this choice is hard to say, but its like ice forming on a lake - all of a sudden its there and every thing is frozen in place. Campaigning after that is mostly reinforcing those who have decided to vote for you, not changing the minds of those who have decided not to.

Pick the winners in these match ups:

Roger -Clif - Estelle
Roger -Clif
Roger -Estelle
Clif-Estelle

If the vote were today, my prediction would be for the candidate in the left hand column of each match up. Clif and Estelle have uphill battles to overcome Roger's popularity and incumbency. Start sooner rather than later would be my advice.
Campaigning is quite a bit of fun, but it is probably best seen as a full-time occupation in the season, and time's awastin'

Rubber, you obviously dont understand the dynamics of local government. It is the job of the supes to make policy. Contact the CAO or the dept of public works if you arent getting the work done.

Obviously you would rather bitch and moan about it, but Roger is actually doing the right thing by not interfering in the day to day operations of county dept of public works. It's not his job to do so.

I want Roger to make policy to get the damn roads fixed. Don’t the Supervisors help set the budget? Budget a new road Rodoni! I can’t tell the county dept of public works to repave a road and they could not do it anyway unless it has been approved. I vote directly for my supervisor and I expect him or her to act on my problem if it is reasonable. Fixing the roads so that they hold up for more than three days and do not destroy automobiles, at least realistically, is something that is reasonable and something that I expect my supervisor to help me with. Supervisors know how things work in the county much more than the average citizen.
Lets put it this way; if Rodoni gives me the finger about this, which he has, I will vote for the person who seems to want to help me. Most workings in this county are intuitive. Something’s need special attention. Trash on the river and roads, a place to pee in Redway and the roads are what matters to me RIGHT NOW!! Rodoni has failed me. Cliff, Estelle, what do you plan to do?
11:23 I don’t need you to give Rodoni more excuses. Yours and his do not make sense to me.

some thinngs

Senor rubber:
?Donde esta "budget" pesos por le pot-holios gonna come from, por favor?

"Too much time spent on minutia" is exactly what I want in a county supervisor. Somebody who sees the job as being a servant of the public, like Jimmy.

Apathy is rampant who cares.

Butt..

The election cycle for supervisors is just starting to begin. I live up north here and the other two races for supervisor (woolys and smith's) havent even begun yet.
No one is actively campaigning up here yet probably because the races don't really heat up till 8 weeks from the election which will be June 3rd.

Well then, I'll set my alarm to April Fool's Day.

Gee I can't understand why Estelle's not posting her events here. Seeing as how there is so much high class dialogue here. I can think of a lot better places to spend my time than engaging this collection of cranks on issues they clearly know nothing about. Perhaps with the coming of spring and the winding down of the Reggae rants the cabin fever will relent.

Ed ..what do you know about campaigning. You were afraid to show your face in Fortuna. Like I asked before did you get a dozen votes up there when you ran.

Ed ..what do you know about campaigning

Probably not as much as you, anon. I did do a major campaign in 1992 in this district, but I also did come in 4th, and worse yet, I lost to Roy Heider and Roger Rodoni, both of whom got more votes than I. I wasn't afraid of Fortuna, au contraire, I square danced there during the campaign. No other candidate can make that claim. It just turned out that there were more conservative voters than square dancers. If I do it again I won't make that same mistake. I'll line dance.

Clif is speaking to SHEL (Southern Humboldt Localization Group) this Wednesday, Feb 27 at 7:30 at the Civic Club on Maple Lane. He'll be answering questions about his position on sustainability etc. He uses the term in his campaign title. He contacted SHEl and asked for an audience, SHEL isn't endorsing him or any other candidate as yet.

Great endorsement, I'll be sure to vote along with the white haired old bats.
