Debate thread
The League of Women Voters is sticking to that horrible 1-minute-response format which doesn't allow for exchange between the candidates.
The first question: the biggest problem facing the BOS. Clif responded state and local budget shortfalls. Estelle said it's the general plan. My guess is that she's prepared to discuss it tonight.
7:17- So far the candidates agree on everything. The Richardson Grove upgrade first. And tribal government membership in HCOAG. Both would vote their conscience on issues.
General Plan - Clif repeats his A-/B+ line when asked for preference between the three plans. Estelle says the process has to be inclusive and believes it's premature to comment on the current proposals because the final plan's going to be different.
Major contributors - Estelle says her money comes only from individuals in the Second District. Clif mentions the Blue Lake Rancheria donation, and says the rest of his donations have been from ten to one thousand dollars.
Fortuna General plan re PALCO site - Clif supports mixed use of retail, industrial, and housing, emphasizing keeping the character of Fortuna. Estelle says it's Fortuna's business, but also supports mixed use and points out that Fortuna is divided on the issue. Clif chimed in to discuss the impact of development on the county as a whole. Estelle admits an "interface" but remains adamant that it's Fortuna business.
7:25 - Railroad - Estelle says it's too expensive. Brings up Eel River Canyon geological issues. Clif wants to keep right-of-way in single ownership to keep options open, but doesn't think it's feasible short term.
7:28 - Budget - Clif says we need to save in the good years, and cites Governor Schwarzenegger's plan favorably. Estelle takes the moment to disagree and oppose the Governor's cuts. Wants to be the "squeaky wheel interfacing with Sacramento."
Estelle wouldn't prioritize economic growth, environmental concerns, and social services one over another. Clif says economic development is the most important of the three, to pay for the other two.
7:31 - Clif restates his opposition to a big box in the Second District. Estelle says she doesn't understand the question, and repeats her argument that it's Fortuna's business.
Marijuana - Estelle supports Proposition 215. She says it's up to the voters whether to legalize it more. Brings up Obama's states rights argument. She says there are too many details to state a position. Clif says the emphasis should be on meth eradication. He supports decriminalization of marijuana. He calls for a community approach to diesel issues. Supports prop 215.
Eel River - Clif wants the dam removed. Small amount of power doesn't warrant damage to watershed. Estelle says it would be wonderful to have the water again. Says the dam would be difficult to remove because of mercury-laden silt. She will fight for Humboldt County's rights to Eel River water - every drop.
7:37 - Estelle says that citizen police oversight is a complicated issue. Supports the idea. Clif supports the idea.
Code enforcement - Clif emphasizes importance of oversight. Laments heavy-handed approach and mixing of civil and criminal enforcement. Says we have to address noncompliance with codes, but supports a gentler approach. Estelle elaborated on some of the abuses, and agrees re meshing of civil and criminal enforcement.
7:41 - Reggae issue. Estelle supports the whole community and laments the division. She remains a Mateel member. It's in court's hands. Clif says it's a community tragedy. Looks forward to speedy court resolution. Says that the Mateel is a powerful community force. Wants to find ways to avoid similar conflicts in the future.
Homeless - Clif doesn't want to have more services which draw homeless from other communities, but doesn't want to under serve the homeless. Wants to develop programs to identify particular needs. Estelle says it's complicated and emphasizes that some of them really need help. Emphasizes distinguishing between different factors of homelessness requiring different approaches.
Estelle says that an owner has the right to build on land (it was a dumb question). Clif agrees. Both agreed that there should be qualifications and restrictions. Clif cites Williamson Act as valid to preserve ag land.
Eel River flow - Clif wants a management plan like the one on the Klamath with coordination between agencies and interests. Estelle wants to stand up to Sonoma County's water agency, but acknowledges that communities down there now rely on the water.
Estelle supports mental health services for homeless and others. She sees the need day in and day out. Says that law enforcement doesn't want to be handling it. Suggests satellite offices. Clif agrees on the need for expansion, with constant reexamining of method of services. He's worried about cut-backs.
Prop 98/99 - Clif no/yes. Estelle no/no. Estelle doesn't like the limitations of 99 to occupier-owners (I'll discuss this later).
Public transportation - both pro.
Estelle brought up Tooby lawsuit in closing, arguing it was a waste of money.
Addendum: Heraldo's take on the debate.
Second addendum: Times Standard coverage. Eureka Reporter coverage (one error - Estelle worked for KMUD, not KHUM).

True, you need a grip on your economy before you can hope to successfully protect the environment and bolster social services.
Oh I like Estelle and feel that between her and Clif only a shitfaced monkey would vote for Clif. I on the other hand will be voting for the dead guy.
Eric says: Clif restates his opposition to a big box in the Second District. Estelle says she doesn't understand the question, and repeats her argument that it's Fortuna's business.
What is a big box store? Very vague question. She did say that there are many lower income people living in Fortuna that would like to have the savings that larger stores provide.
Eric said: (Re mental illness) Estelle says that law enforcement wants to be handling it.
I believe she said that law enforcement DID NOT want to be handling the mentally ill.
Eric said: Estelle brought up Tooby lawsuit in closing, arguing it was a waste of money.
Too bad Clif blew his closing statement...he was very well rehearsed on everything elso.
Estelle does not have handlers.

Interesting. Still very hard to tell what each of them is actually talking about. Both support 215. So did Meredth Lintott when she was running for Mendocino County DA and now she supports cutting back the county limits from what was unlimited plants in 100 square feet to 6 mature plants. She's still "supporting" 215, tho. That's the difficulty with generalties. (I don't know Clif, I'm sure Estelle would be wholehearted in her support of medical marijuana patients, but I'm just saying..... I don't sense any clear distinction between them from your rendition of the "debate."
Eric you support Clif, where is he actually different from Estelle in his positions? Or is this election just about which of these two will be most effective in moving the same agenda?

AS we have all said many times,Clif and Estelle are both nice people who are not up to this job. AS we all vote for Roger it is clear that he was a leader and that Johanna is also. On her own Johanna stands head and shoulder above the compition. Vote for Roger!
How do we know that about Johanna? We knew it about Roger, but WE don't know his wife. Clif has a better background of experience than Estelle. Why did they ask most of the same questions? How boring, and un-inspired. Shame on the league of women voters. I like more of Clifs ideas than Estelles, and I really like that he does not like big box stores, wal-mart, home depot, and the such will kill a town. cheap crap from china we do not need more of.
Ed - Clif supports decriminalization of marijuana. Estelle hasn't said whether she does or not.
Doesn't matter much for the position of supervisor however.
The candidates have more in common in their positions than differences. The closest thing to a debate is over the supervisor's role when a municipal jurisdiction embarks upon a course which could impact the whole county as manifested in the big box proposal for the PALCO property in Fortuna. Estelle has said that it's Fortuna's business what they do with PALCO's land. Clif has acknowledged that the city has the power to make its own decision, but when the impact could flow well beyond the borders of Fortuna, the BOS is bound to make some noise about it. He believes the impact of a big box would to too big for the Second District to metabolize it.
Again, it's the issue that brought Clif into politics. Estelle has taken Roger's position, which could potentially earn her some of Roger's votes in Fortuna, and it could conceivably win the election for her if Southern Humboldt residents don't make the big box an election issue. We'll see how that plays out.
I have no idea what is going to happen this election. Both candidates have a broad base of support. I am beginning to be less convinced that Roger's name will garner more than 50 percent, but I really don't know.

10:08 - I really agree with your assessment of the League of Women Voters this cycle. They made it almost impossible to have meaningful debates. I really wish someone besides them had stepped up to organize a real debate, and not merely concurrent press conferences where they answered the same questions in both debates. Why didn't they have a panel of local journalists like they have in other debates?
I give them an F. Truly.
I give them an F. Truly.
Well Johanna said she's committed to serving out Roger's term. Has she specifically committed to serving until 2010 ?
Has she specifically committed to serving until 2010 ?
Judging from the tv ad that's the logical implication.
Judging from the tv ad that's the logical implication.
I would never base a vote on a mere implication. I'd want to know what the plan is. Carnahan had committed to accepting the position to keep Ashcroft out of the Senate. I'd have voted for him/her.
Roger, may he rest in peace, was Maxxam's guy on the BOS. Johanna would be Sierra Pacific's gal on the BOS. Enough with corporate rule.
Clif runs an orchard his mother still owns, and works part-time as a carpenter to get by in the off-season. Honorable, sure. Experience for being a supervisor? Don't be silly. Naomi Steinberg and her "prog" friends "picked Clif". Don't make the same mistake.
Estelle Fennell is uniquely qualified to represent people from Bridgeville to Whitethorn. She is smart, caring, and brave, and she listens!
Go Democrat in '08. Estelle Fennell June 3!

Clif Clendenen LIKES Arnold's budget? Thinks we should "save" in the "good" years? WHAT "good" years?
County government has to save something back in good years AND lean. Why? Because shit happens, that's why. We can't sit around waiting for "good" years.
I state the obvious. Hope people don't fall for Clif.

What is weird now is that Clif Clendenen has Eric Kirk who is racially prejudiced against Bear River Native Americans in the 2nd District in Humboldt County while taking money from Blue Lake Rancheria Native Americans. Clif obviously doesn't know what his handler's real politics are.
As one of the "shit faced monkeys' I'd like to say that Estelle does not require preparation from me. She has a real grasp of the issues and has from the start of the campaign. I agree that these encounters are not debates. Just the usual Q&As.
The role of supervisor need more than nice guy with good ideas to represent our district. We need someone with leadership skills that will engage us as citizens and work hard to represent us in the county government. Specifics don't matter as much as knowing someone's intelligence, character and abilities to fully represent us at the county. From one shit-faced monkey to the rest of you shit-faced monkey's...Estelle is by far the person that will listen, be engage in our communities, and best represent our best intentions at the county government.
"Estelle is by far the person that will listen, be engage in our communities, and best represent our best intentions at the county government."
Unfortunately your best intentions are exactly what frighten many other people.

"Estelle Fennell is uniquely qualified to represent people from Bridgeville to Whitethorn. She is smart, caring, and brave, and she listens!"
And then will do whatever her friends need.
And then will do whatever her friends need.
Wow StepHen once again confuses me with his attack on one Tribe of native Americans suporting the real racist Injun haters then calling Eric racist.
Buck, don't be a fool and don't try to sell that lie. Johanna will be an independent voice as she always has been, as Roger was. She did not support many of Maxxams moves or the recall election. Neither did Roger. They do support logging as do I ,as do the groups you support. Or at least they say they do now that it will be helpful in court. You are simply spinning in the wind. A vote for Roger Rodoni is a vote for the people of the 2nd. I will vote for Roger.
Estelle was only a second rate amateur news person. a typical Estelle report would be
" next story is about a how Jane Doe of Black Springs experienced heavy smoke and saw flames across the valley which scared her and her three dogs."
" This is Jane Doe of Black Springs and I saw smoke and flames across the valley and it really scared my three dogs"
Mostly Blah Blah Blah to fill the time.
Then her touchy feely campaign about listening and being a "Strong Voice"
We don't need more Talk we need action. We need someone who can work well with the other Supes and do the nitty gritty work of running the county.
Estelle didn't respond well at KMUD when she was called out for her blatant bias and took her ball and went home crying "censorship Free speech Nobody can tell me what to do/"
What an ego she has.

You FOOLS, stop arguing over Estelle vs. Clif, focus on getting out the vote for either.
There are really only two candidates in this race now. Roger Rodini's name and "everyone else".
Estelle or Clif makes no difference, for now. They will be on the ballot again in November for you to argue about. But that happens ONLY if the Rodoni name isn't the winner in June.
So. Hummers who want change had better get out the vote for either Estelle or Clif, it really doesn't matter which one for now.
Fortuna/Rio Dell has 70% of the population and will vote heavily for the Name. Don't be fooled again.

Other than those who are obviously in the tank for a specific candidate, did ANYONE think Estelle or Clif performed well last night?.
Estelle was stumbling all over her lines, and Clif looked petrified.
All the candidates in the 3rd District debate seemed to do a much better job.

Ed - Clif supports decriminalization of marijuana. Estelle hasn't said whether she does or not.
Doesn't matter much for the position of supervisor however.
Eric - I'm glad to hear that about Clif. The present medical marijuana ordinance, for all its flaws, is one of the best in the state. It was largely the work of John Woolley, who is retiring, and Roger Rodoni. With the bulwarks of its support gone, what will happen when the pressure comes to reduce the limits to stop "commercial growing". Look at the mess in Mendocino county to see the damage that can come from having people in authority who will not listen to scientific information and don't care about the burden on the medical patients.
Its a real problem, I believe, that will come up during the next Supervisor's term of office. That's why I'm concerned about it.

chris - They both did fine. The 5th District candidates are admittedly more dynamic public speakers, but there is something to the quiet reflective approach of both Estelle and Clif.
Clif conforms to the old stereotypes of a farmer. Soft-spoken and doesn't say much, but listens and when he speaks, you know it's important.

Fine? Fine? You call that information? They gave general business sounding vague answers or ran off some technical sounding buzz words. Do they understand the math? Do they understand that the economy is going to take even a bigger hit in the next few years with inflation, hopefully legal-pot, the consequences of the war debt on states, etc? Did anyone ask Cliff to explain how saving for a rainy day guarantees some of that money will disappear if not very well invested (inflation)? Did anyone ask Estelle to explain her mumbo jumbo from a biological standpoint? No. Garbage. We are all a bunch of sheep nodding our heads to the one that most resembles our own lifestyle. Who cares if they actually know anything or have any idea about how the market works and the constraints on capital. Either one of them ever done any economic development work? Nope. Do they tend their own investments? Do they understand what a balanced portfolio is all about? I know Estelle doesn't I have talked to her. Oh she sounds great and she has a little knowledge but there is nothing much substantive there if you spend ten minutes with her. Except bravado. I would do the same analysis on Clif but haven't had the opportunity to as of yet. Eric has a good idea of some of these things so I trust his ideas and instincts on Clif. But please don't call that a debate or either candidate well informed since we haven't seen evidence of either yet.
By the way Big Ticket Store advantages are choice. They give more moderate selections at lower prices that meet the majority of people's needs. Mom and Pop will get the specialty item left over slots. They do not represent general improvement in just bringing in jobs or sales. The exception is that once you get one then the others come in because they see there is enough market to support businesses of that size and they don't have to pay to do the market studies. Estelle is voting for BIG corporate development if that is her position. It isn't just Fortuna's business it is every person's business in Humboldt County. That is like saying that dredging the bay doesn't really work for Rio Dell or Scotia because it won't help them. THAT IS HER BUSINESS if she is a supervisor. What a twitty thing to say just to play to Fortuna. Stupid stupid short sighted ideas.
Let's weigh skills.
Estelle. Can type, write, talk to people, has interviewed people in public jobs about their jobs, and can use radio equipment. And has served as camping coordinator at Reggae on the River through 2006.
Clif. Has managed people, ran various kinds of equipment. Knows a lot about land use and soils. Built a market for products. Kept a business stable and ongoing for a number of years. Had to deal directly with several county agencies. Has kids so has had indepth relations no doubt with schools and other family type needs. I think he also has sat on several boards so one would think he understands process, regulation, and democratic governance.

Ask these two what they are going to do to prepare Humboldt County for global warming and the depletion of our watersheds.
Then there is Johanna who is superior to both Clif and Estelle. Voting for Roger is the way to protect medical pot and the many other important issues we need a strong supervisor for. Johanna will do that job for us but only if we all vote for Roger Rodoni.

Just your average person really with a little biology and too much economics under my wing. What I am though is sick of seeing us vote on candidates because they have good hair or know some words that sound big. Government sucks. We are the government. Time to stop the cracker ass petty shit and ask people running your government what the hell they really have in mind and how much think time they can put into what needs to be done.
