On the final lap in the Second District race (with brief SAF report)

The Times Standard is endorsing Jimmy Smith and Mark Lovelace. They will publish their Second District endorsement tomorrow.

Humboldt Herald is discussing the endorsements and the bloggers there are speculating as to the TS Second District endorsement. Hank Sims is "almost certainly" convinced it will be Clif.

The Eureka Report went with the conservatives all the way: Rodoni, Vevoda, and Plumley.

....

The TS decided to interview Johanna Rodoni after all. You can view the video here. You can read some excerpts here.

....

Clif was at the Summer Arts Festival today. I think he had a good time. I've been surprised by some of the individuals who have approached him to say that they're voting for him, but don't want to make a public deal out of it because they don't want to hurt Estelle's feelings. Personally, I think Estelle has the depth to understand that politics is not always about friendships. But as one of the public Clif supporters, I can testify to the occasional awkwardness. As I was waiting for the shuttle back to Redway (I don't understand why anyone would drive down and pay 20 dollars to park - I didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes either way), Estelle exited the shuttle to attend the festival.

On the SAF, I had a great time as well. The kids section was the best to date. And they've added Egyptian food to the mix. And May's Chinese is off to the side by itself away from the other food booths. If you want to skip the lines for a good plate of noodles (my daughter and son shared a plate, then later my daughter asked for another before she slept a long nap in my arms through all the music and commotion - she's obviously in a growth spurt). After some coaxing and her brave brother's example, she also dipped her hand into hot wax. She also did a flower.

Feet First and the ballet students put on an excellent show as usual. The Andeans played their music. And a great student Afro-rhythm band played their hearts out on the lawn stage. Didn't make it for any performances at the Solar Stage, though when I left him Clif was headed back there for a performance which interested him from a reading of the program.

....

Lot's more campaign related letters to the TS. Lots more to the ER.

....

The TS "election roundup" has more.

Comments:
Eric you're turning into a local solutions bore. Plumley is about as conservative as John Woolley. He is a liberal that has his feet grounded in reality. Of course it's just not good enough if he doesn't have the head dancing in the LS star dust.

just back from SAF- great time, lots of beauties, gee the hippies sure make pretty babies, must be the drugs, or clean air and water...kind of amazed at the amount of locals backing Clif- wow, they must not like Estelle, one person immediately referenced ROTR bias. Estelle could deal with that issue directly i suppose...

Did anyone of my fellow Mendos hear Kendall Smith on KMUD friday night? She was asked about measure B and didn't answer the question, just danced around it like a POLITICIAN. I don't agree with her for voting to put it on the ballot but stand up and stand behind your views, please! A follow-up question from Cynthia would have been appropos I think such as, "Well Kendall you didn't asnwer the question; are you or are you not in favor of measure B? Will you vote for it?"

Vote for the challenger Paula Deeter!

(Any KS supporter out there want to defend her non-answer yesterday?)

Ah, the bullshit spins the weekend before the election. The ROTR thing is a non-issue. People can piss and moan all they want, but they aren't going to drive down from their forty just to vote for someone because they didn't like the news coverage about their pet project. Politics are ultimately candidate driven, and Estelle Fennell is clearly the best candidate in this race.

Estelle has great support in Fortuna. The Democrats especially love her, and if the dead guy doesn't win she will do very, very well against Clif in Fortuna in November.

Actually, now I’m having second thoughts.

The nearly invariable rule of Times-Standard endorsements is two steps to the left and one to the right. I was thinking that the circumstances of this election would override this rule, but now I’m thinking perhaps not.

They would have gone for Roger if he were alive, no doubt at all. Respect for Rodoni sentimentality in the Second District, plus the Times-Standard’s unsalveable ache to be perceived as “impartial,” may well swing the endorsement into the Rodoni column.

Plus they may get some fun out of the brashness of the thing.

Also, Rodoni will probably win, so that figures into the calculations.

I don't agree, and anyone can say they are a fortuna business owner, and be a sohum estelle lacky, like the ones who keep smashing my clif signs.a bunch of thugs, like the ones who stole ROTR, all of the same ilk. where is mr. electrician with all his threats and fear mongering about electrical lines this year? Seems like the MCC is doing just fine without him, and the rest of the pp gang. both Clif and Estelle would make a good supe, however, clif would be better, more honest, More honorable, more business experience, a great listener, was a fire fighter, didn't just report on 'em. Has a Bachelor of Science in Botany.Ad a Democrat, I'm voting for Clif.

Plumley is conservative? You have a whacked out value system Eric if Plumley is conservative. He's not remotely like the two actual conservatives who were endorsed.

To Sat7pm
You sure are bitter and accusatory for someone anonymous....
"lacky...bunch of thugs....threats and fear mongering.."
Why do you accuse Estelle supporters without any evidence?
Why wouldn't the writer be a "Fortuna business owner"?
You are the heart of the problem trying to keep the community divided.
You give Cliff supporters a bad name.

AND you lie. Clif is not a Democrat. Estelle Fennell is the Democrat in this one. Clif is not registered in any political party.

Estelle is the only registered democrat in the race. Clif is declined-to-state. I believe Johanna is a republican. Anyways, it is a non-partisan office.

I am sorry to hear about the damage to your signs - that is not cool. If you know who it is, report it to the authorities.

In our little Redway neighborhood a number of the Estelle lawn signs have graffiti on them. It's like the stuff you see in the subways of big cities, doesn't look like anything but spiky lettering. I dont get it. Probably just kids.

"Estelle Fennell is the Democrat in this one. Clif is not registered in any political party."

Sounds like an indictment of Estelle. She's part of the establishment. It takes a real thinker to be independent.

"Plumley is conservative? You have a whacked out value system Eric if Plumley is conservative. He's not remotely like the two actual conservatives who were endorsed."

If you pander to conservatives you earn the taint.

two cents

whether you like it or not, whether its fair or not, whether it make sense or not, the big issue/difference between Clif and Estelle will be Reggae, if there is a run-off in November. We know Estelle's views (pro-PP) and Clif doesn't even have to have any, just listen and be even-handed with his comments.

Maybe resurgent ghost voting will make this moot- i'll be very very very surprised if EF wins this thing, but not surprised if any of the others do.

JUST VOTE PEOPLE! (but not for RR)

Estelle spent many years running a crew for the Mateel's Reggae on the River. As a strong Mateel supporter over those years Estelle helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Mateel. Of course she must have became friends with the Reggae coordinators over those years, and did give a favorable report on KMUD about their event, Reggae Rising.
HOWEVER, Estell did NOT work for Reggae Rising, after all those years of working ROTR.
I think for you to say she is firmly in the PP camp is disingenuous.
I'm sure Estelle is still a supporter of the Mateel and KMUD, and yet still has not turned her back on her old friends in PP from all those years working at ROTR.
It's a very fine line to try to walk, but I think the fact that she worked ROTR and not RR shows more neutrality than you give her credit for.
After all she is running for an office where she will represent everyone in the second district, not one faction or another.

Sohum voters really need to get a life if ROTR figures into their voting decisions.

Vote for Johanna because she towers above both Clif and Estelle in job related work experience and can handle the job from day one, indeed, yes indeed, she already is handling the job, has handled it through being Roger's No. 1 advisor for all of Roger's terms.

But the real reason not to vote for either Clif or Estelle is protecting democracy from the concerted attack on it by Progressive political manipulators, e.g. Local Solutions, HCDCC, Bonnie Neeley, et all, with their Prog agenda being introduced via these two trojan horse candidates. What's wrong with the Prog agenda? It consistently attacks democracy when democracy means mainstream residents are in the majority and vote things their way. Progs don't like that when they do that, e.g. the huge Prog flap over Fortuna's City Council favoring a big box at the Fortuna Palco site. It is all Fortuna's business yet Progs from outside can't stand the idea and have launched their stealth candidates, Estelle and Cliff to change Fortuna's majority desires.

So vote Johanna to protect democracy in the 2nd District. And remember, if you were going to vote for Estelle or Clif, don't waste your time, vote Johanna, or if you're a dyed in the wool liberal Democrat and refuse to vote for a Republican, write in Steve Lewis on June 3rd and send money for my 2012 campaign.

Estelle knows.

A nice running car would be nice too. You could donate that right away actually..and my computer's pretty obsolete now and the tv's ancient and...

looks like stephen's trying to cash in on roger's demise. real classy, steve-o.

You can't vote for Johanna since she's not a candidate. But you can vote for Roger's name and cross your fingers that the Governor appoints Johanna to serve the full term, even though she herself publicly stated just the other day that this is "a very big 'if'."

On the other hand there are two excellent living candidates who you can be SURE will be the one to serve the term if you vote for them.

So take your pick: cross your fingers and hand your power over to the Gov., or choose from among the only two actual candidates left in this election, Clif or Estelle.

If you actually think the Gov would not support Johanna then vote for Steve or someone else. I don't think there is a snowball's chance in hell that he would appoint anyone else.

Cliff can't speak on his own without someone telling hin what to say. And then there is the $10,000 from Blue Lake that he just can't explain.

Estelle wants Hoopa to be included on HCOAG. What is she thinking??

Doesn't leave much choice. Vote for Roger so Johanna can get the job done!

Right on! Clif and Estelle are fly-weights compared to Johanna's experience which is why each of them has already made bad decisions by allowing themselves to be handled by outside Prog politicos before even entering office.

Talking to yourself again Stephen?

Clif or Estelle. Estelle or Clif. Vote for a live one and drag all your friends to the polls.

As the great American philosopher Huck Finn said, "I don't take no truck with dead people."

"I don't take no truck with dead people" either. Not much in the way of conversationalists.

Vote for Clif,
I love apples. So does Clif.
What more do you want?

On the other hand, Estelle has a great name. Fennel. I like fennel and I like apples. I also like macaroni, but not necessarily Rodoni. Does anyone have a better way to choose a candidate?

Reading entrails.

I just believe that Estelle will be apt to care more for So Hum politics than Clif. I don't believe that she is in the PP camp. I agree that she has friends there, we all do, that's what makes this whole split so difficult. I heard her news reporting around the RR issue and I dont think it was terribly slanted. I saw a few PP'ers at the SAMF but many were missing. That's just sad.
The SAMF rocked! Well done everyone who made it happen.

Lucy - fair enough. I think Clif may surprise you, but at this point it's not about convincing anybody between Clif and Estelle. What's most important is for those who support either to turn out and vote. The biggest reason Sohum is often so disenfrachised is that we don't often turn out in large numbers. We blew a big chance last fall. Let's not blow it tomorrow.

VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE Don't take your freedom to vote for granted. You've only got one life. Live it consciously.

Some people believe there are more lives, but I'm pretty sure you have to reregister if that's the case.

Lame. Tell you what, Eric. I'll trade you some zingy witticisms and writing lessons plus throw in some political analysis skills training, in exchange for you drawing up incorporation papers for my next project. That way you can finally be of service to the community other than providing the local blog equivalent of a Today's Show of latest news topics.

I had to laff when I looked up the meaning and origion of some names. For example Stephen was the first Christian martyr.

I laughed more when I saw that you apparently still do not know what "Stephen" means.

Now there indeed is a mystery. Stephen means well I am sure, but Stephen, no I do not know what you mean. I think most of us have no idea what it is Stephen means.

Mind-reader said...

"zingy witticisms and writing lessons," from Stephen!?

He's not even qualified to teach the remedial course for kindergardeners!

Perhaps that's why no one reads his own website and he spends all his time nitpicking Heraldo's and Eric's blogs.

Here's my election prediction:

If Rodoni's name wins, Stephen will crow that he "told us all along" that this would be the outcome,

or, on the other hand,

if Rodoni's name gets less than 50% tomorrow, Stephen will whine that he "told us all along" that the election was unfair because the "progs" wouldn't allow an illegal, magical "special election" to be called. He will probably demand some other fanciful method with no legal basis to get Johanna onto the fall ballot, then when that doesn't happen he will cry even more loudly that the election was "stolen" by the "progs."

Let's see how good my mind reading skills are.

But anon 9:58, I thought you just posted this: "I had to laff when I looked up the meaning and origion of some names."

Now you post this? "I think most of us have no idea what it is Stephen means."

Try a Google search on meaning of names next time.

Hot damn! Johanna won! I told you so.

Oh god, she didn't make the 50% goal. I told you this could happen.

Hey, I should run for public office. I think I hedged my bets pretty well in this campaign.

You missed my point Stephen. Your rants are meaningless.

to you but not the vast majority of humankind that agrees with me and not you.
