New fires and old fires
Yesterday an RV caught fire in Meyers Flat. This morning an outbuilding caught fire in Whale Gulch on Chemise Mountain Road. A slew of local volunteer fire departments got them both out. The causes of both are unknown, but this is a really bad time to be careless!
I got the reports from KMUD news who are updating at the top of every hour today. People have been posting harsh criticisms of the coverage of the big events this week. I suspect that some of the criticism has been agenda driven. But I just want to thank Terry, Cynthia, the rest of the KMUD staff, and volunteers like Behr who have really stepped up to the challenge and are working around the clock. They've adapted in response to early criticisms and their hearts are really into their work.
As to weather, the bad news is that precipitation is unlikely while lightning strikes could set new fires. The good news is that the wind isn't expected to pick up until midweek which will be a boon to the firefighting effort.

I second your comments Eric! Terri and Cynthia with the support of Behr, KMUD staff and volunteers are doing a first rate job of keeping the community up to date and informed in a time of flames, smoke and rumors. Great pulling in of citizen news too.
Thanks you all so much for your incredible energy, hard work and devotion to our community and its safety.
Marcia

Talk about the Dark Side...It's definitely dark where I sit up here in Island Mtn but so far nobody here can figure where the "Island Mtn Fire" we hear being reported is. Does anybody know its whereabouts?
I too was frustrated that the KMUD News didn't take a page from Estelle's book and get on the Fed/Fire stories immediately. The greater part of doing the news has to do with knowing what events (if you'll excuse the expression) warrant a focused and swift responce. That said, I believe Terri and Cynthia and the rest of the KMUD crew have done an admirable job of keeping us posted these last few days.

Shouldn't you of ended this post with something along the line of, "For KMUD News, this is Eric Kirk, back to you at the studio, Cynthia..."?
It is a good reason to fully support KMUD so they can hire, pay well, and keep these guys around and make a career for them. Change is hard and experience takes time to develop.

"...knowing..." applies to supervisor as well, and Estelle will hit the ground running when elected to the board of supervisors. Estelle has a very tuned sense of what is important for her community and she devoted much more of her time to KMUD than could be asked of any one person. She used that time effectively. Hard act to follow.
So ease up. KMUD is doing great!
Go Estelle!

She used much of that time to promote her personal agendas but it of course doesn't mean she will do that on the board of supervisors.

Whatever, 6:51. I sure appreciated Estelle's voice on KMUD during the Canoe fire. I also appreciate everything Terri and Cynthia, and all the KMUD staff and volunteers have been doing during these current fires, not to mention the DEA/FBI invasion.
Why not just voice appreciation for people like those mentioned above, who do something good for our community? Why look for a hidden agenda, when probably none exists? What are you, 6:51, doing for this community, besides making snide remarks?
Go firefighters, go KMUD, go Estelle, go Clif, go Eric... these people are being proactive.
But Stephen Lewis should "go"... home.

I worked with Terri and Behr this Saturday and they were doing a nice job of getting the news and putting it out there at a time of community crisis.
What KMUD is noted for is getting on local crisis stories and staying on them. I thought we were a bit late out the gate but since then we've caught up well. The fact that Terri is at the station all day Saturday covering the story bodes very well for the future of KMUD news. News doesn't have a 9-5 schedule, and neither can real newspeople. If you don't have the instinct to get on it and stay on it when the story is emerging, regardless of what that does to your schedule, you'll never do good news.
Terri's on it, and I expect great things from her in the future. -ED

Harsh criticisms? Against KMUD? Who would be fool enough to criticize the only local up-to-the-minute coverage. As a volunteer for KMUD, I might be a little biased. but KMUD serves the community in a very real way. Sure, one can say that KHSU, or one of the "local" TV stations also serves, but there are no top of the hour information. you have to catch the broadcast to hear anything about what is happening.
Without KMUD, it would all be corporate controlled media. Like the guy in Missouri said, "We were boppin' to the oldies, while a wall of water was heading towards our community, and the radio station was a thousand miles away."

Well that kind of points to the real problem doesn't. It wasn't a snide remark. It was my opinion and a clarification of the misleading statement of spin posted before it. There has been seemingly little scrutiny about the integrity of southern humboldt's information and the people who are seen as being so called credible sources I believe there is a need to speak out when I see a political agenda being foisted upon the community. It doesn't matter which side. Just keepin' it real.

huh?
I think no fireworks on the 4th would be a really good idea.
Please quit bringing up estelle. she quit. If you compare where Terry and Cynthia are in the talents, as far as
length of time on the job, to where estelle was with this same length of time, T and C are head over heels WAY better than estelle was.estelle grew into the job, over a VERY LONG period of time. Kudos to all of you at KMUD.

Your admit your smear of Estelle was motivated because you are either supporting Clif or Johanna.
You obviously feel you must dump on
Estelle every chance you get, even when she gets the most mild praise for the monumental work she did for the community.
I'm getting some very bad feelings, combined with a terrible stinky odor coming from Clif. And in my opinion this is not Johanna. Clif's supporters and handlers havn't a clue about decency.

I think we all just need to stop and think, what is our part in the energy that has been in our community the last year and a half. Stop, look at the level of dialogue, the cops, the fires. Have we created the community we want. Let's slow down and think before we speak. Every bit of negative energy that comes out of our mouths, or computers, our actions are piling up. A day, a week,a month of kindness would do a lot of healing and then maybe I wouldn't get this feeling in the pit of my stomach.

You are going to have to sell your paranoia and peddle your eight-grade mentality elsewhere. My first comment only meant that everyone has a personal agenda and who is to say Estelle will use it once on the board of supervisors. The comment can be read both ways. Secondly I don't live in your district and I don't practice your brand of kiss my ass or I'll smear yours politics. I graduated from the 19th century a while ago.

KHUM is now THE community radio station to listen to. they were completely on it with info concerning the feds as well as the fires.
Where was KMUD?NOWHERE!
KMUD is OLD and STALE.
When they finally got on it they kept reporting wrong information over and over. LAME
I finally turned to KHUM and they continued breaking in with REAL updates.

Our community sorely missed Estelle's calm voice on the airwaves. She always went beyond the call of duty to ensure that our community was informed with the VITAL and CORRECT information during community crisis' such as the fires and the Fed raids.
Anyone posting negatives re: Estelle over this is directly coming from her political opponents playbook

Great job, KMUD. It took a while to get up to speed, but you're there now.
KHUM and KOZT has had great coverage as well. Thanks, every one!

I have worked with Terri before a couple of times and that girl is a go-getter. She sounded so exhausted by the end of the day and still she kept going. Thank you Terri for giving it your all like everything you do.
Estelle was great and I miss her on the news. Terri and Behr were doing nice work, and I'm glad we have them. KMUD still stands as a strong community resource for our community.
Another appreciative local listener says, I loved Estelle, even though I was uncomfortable with her chumminess with PP and I'm greatly impressed with Terri and Cynthia. You gals rock. Thanks to all three of these women for their selfless service.
For Crying out loud! I was just at the Rueben thread and it too was all about Estelle and how great she was. Sure, she did a really good job. But she didn't always get it right. I recall instances where she reported on news items and didn't get it all right- or didn't get all sides to the story.
Move on people! She quit. Terri and Cynthia are bright women who are doing a fabulous job. Quite an amazing job really given how new they are at it. I suspect both of them will become as good if not better than Estelle.

This is clearly a post by someone trying to fan the flames against Estelle...maybe you?

Terri and Cynthia are already better than estelle. People are tired of estelle,& her campaign signs that are STILL littering our roadways and forest lands, after both of the other candidates have taken down their signs, estelle, like pp, will probably have to be forced into doing the right thing for the land and the community.
