Reggae On The River ® Rises From The Ashes & Lands In Benbow July 19

(Redway, CA July 11, 2008): Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, on Saturday, July 19th, the Mateel Community Center will revive Reggae on the River as a single-day, roots reggae and world music celebration at Benbow Lake State Recreation Area in southern Humboldt. A transitional year for the event, with issues still unresolved in the festival’s ongoing legal dispute, Reggae on the River 08 will be an in-house production offered in a keep-the-name-alive-forever spirit, with hopes to return the festival to 3 day event that will again support the work of both community non-profits and the Mateel Community Center.

In keeping with the paired down theme, the festival will eschew top heavy headliners to feature a deep and top class billing of international talent including The Wailing Souls, Culture with Kenyatta Hill, Katchafire, Warrior King, Sister I-Live, Stevie Culture, and Afromassive. Additionally, the event will offer vendors, a children’s area, delicious food and drink, a beer & wine bar, and plenty of irie vibes on the beautiful shores of the Eel River in Benbow Lake S.R.A.

Don’t miss this chance to support the work of MCC while helping keep Reggae on the River alive. Tickets are available online at www.inticketing.com and at the usual Humboldt and Mendocino County outlets for $50 advance. Visit either www.mateel.org or www.reggaeontheriver.com for further festival information and don’t miss the return of Reggae on the River at Benbow Lake State Recreation Area on Saturday, July 19. Gates open at 11am and music starts at 11:30am. Camping is available on a first come, first served basis in both Benbow Lake and Richardson Grove campgrounds by calling (800) 444-7275.

Reggae on the River is a registered trademark of the Mateel Community Center.

Comments:
How immature, unoriginal, and hateful it sounds to be using the phrase "rising from the ashes".

Why? Does People's have a patent on that word? Or that phrase? Hardly. As I recall, info on the Mateel's history has always included something like, "rising like the phoenix from the ashes, the Mateel community center was rebuilt through the proceeds of Reggae on the River, when our first beloved hall was burned to the ground following an arson fire."

Or, perhaps it's equally immature, original and hateful for people's to use the word "reggae" in any of their advertising.

Get over yourself.

I didn't say 'original' I said UNoriginal --LOL, But I think the word that best sums up what I mean is --tacky

Are they eschewing or is that a spin on pursuing and not having any luck getting? They're right, the line-up's not exactly top heavy with headliners, but I'm sure it'll be a nice event. Me, I'll be going to Reggae Rising on the River..

it is unfortunate that the event we all enjoyed for years and years has turned into this. A whole bunch of angry folks, a one day event on one of the shallowest stretches of the eel river, AAaargh all this reggae angst just makes me want to go to Konocti and see some washed up rockers drink their geritol.

"But I think the word that best sums up what I mean is --tacky"

So is gloating. You got what you wanted, so why not just be gracious about it and leave it alone? Like the second poster said, that metaphor has been in use by the Mateel for a long time.

Nice art work by Stu Moskowitz.

So is gloating. You got what you wanted, so why not just be gracious about it and leave it alone?

The point is why can't the MCC leave it alone? Why'd they have to put that little barb in there.

Do your home work poster 7:34 and poster 8:08. The history page DOES NOT have those words or that thought included anywhere in it. The phrase was very recently composed and very eagerly used by the Mateel. Accuracy has never really been a strong point with MCC supporters. Ever.

These words ARE on the MCC.org history page. Is it time to update the site?
One of the benefit events for that building fund was the first Reggae on the River, which today, is co-produced by People Productions as our largest annual event, consistently attracting more than 12,000 visitors to our area every August.

More kerosene on the fire.

A bully took all my little trucks except one. I went off to play with my last little truck. The bully and his friends are upset because playing with my last little truck reminds them (and everyone else) that they are bullies. They don't even want me to utter the word "truck" because they now have more trucks than anybody and think they own that word.

Whiner.

How about we shed some light on this subject for these who are so quick to judge.

Some of the worst offenders have been cleaned up since the Mateel's release went up.

I wonder who misled them, convientently misled them in the first place.

Now shut up and everyone just enjoy the show.

Thanks.

And here this one is still being fixed but you can help by voting for it to get it to the top of the list.

Put that energy to good use and quit spinning it or next I'll go and link to all the utubes and the trial stuff at KMUD archives.

Let's get on the peace train. It's over folks. The Mateel finally has PP's fangs out of its throat and PP has a whole lot of work to do to see if they can rebuild a new show.

Mateel Rising forever!

Okay I just posted the press release from Eric's blog at two reggae sites that didn't have it up and sent it to the local paper. Long Live the Mateel! I'm on the train and gonna help. Send it to your friends.

Convoy of feds heading for Whitethorn.

when, where?

This is what you get from a "community" of narcotics dealers.

nice stereotyping and guilt-by-association there, 11:02

KMUD announced it about 45 minutes ago, saying they had been seen 20 minutes earlier.

Okay, Eric please start another thread for the Feds. That's really important and needs its own thread. Back to the Mateel. I'm sending it to my friends and the radio station. Get the word out! Reggae on the River Lives at the Mateel! Go Mateel! Use your energy to create a positive. Send it!

Paste and copy, paste and copy. Southern Oregon and all of California! Hit the public and community radio stations. Hit the press. LA Times will cover it won't they? Call the Mateel for a copy. Yeah Baby let's do it!

This is great!! Like one of Aesop's fables where the lesson is quite clear. And this modest event sounds fun, pleasant, like Summer Arts, like ROR before it got overwhelmingly huge. Just enjoy it!

Mateel rising, see you there.

Very cool! I am proud of the Mateel for trying. The community will have fun at the concert and like 12:59 said, small and just like the old days.

And 7:34, you also said it sounds hateful for them to say "rising from the ashes". I think you sound hateful yourself. Take your venom elsewhere.

Warning: Rant to follow.

We all know who is largely responsible for the widespread public belief that "Reggae on the River is dead." There was anything but honor to the actions of formerly entrusted comrades. It was despicable. Certain PPeople intentionally tried to make Reggae on the River disappear, only to reemerge as a privatized, renamed, no sell out show. What a f-ing waste! Nearly wasted it for everyone. The Mateel will be ok. The outcome for cheats, well, we all know how that story goes.

So, you know who you are, maybe it's time for some retractions. How about some apologies and honest PR? You are all pretty creative. How about you compose some public statements that affirm the existence of Reggae on the River? That would be a great step toward healing. The stunts that were, and continue to be, pulled are too low IMHO.

Maybe parrots like Anthony Postman (ThePostOM,) current editor of the Reggae Festival Guide, will do a retraction of his editorial comment, which appeared in the current issue in an article about "Greater Awareness Through Festivals" [lol] (go to page 40):"LARGE OPERATIONS CALL FOR PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY - Keeping Reggae Rising (known for years as Reggae on the River) clean and green is becoming more and more..etc "

It is ironic, his rag also featured (go to page 18) listing for Reggae on the River...!

Who's teaching ThePostOm to talk?

I'm going to hold off posting about the Feds until I have more information. I spoke to Terri and she received a couple of telephone calls, but they provided very little information. If anybody has more, e-mail it to me. I'll post if someone puts their name to a rumor, and respect your confidentiality.

Let's not forget that without the slave trade we wouldn't even have reggae music.

Reggae Rising is a succubus of greed and corporatism, back room dealings and deception Very Republican.

Lets go to benbow and get arrested for smoking the herb .Thats what is the state parks mission .The said and I quote There will be no 215 being indulged on our property .

Let's not forget that without the slave trade we wouldn't even have reggae music.

And without slavery we wouldn't have jazz, blues, or rock.

But there are plenty more examples of good coming from bad. War has produced cures for ailments, technical advances, and even pulled countries out of depressions. Hitler brought Germany the autobahns and various scientific advances. Stalin defeated Hitler and industrialized the Soviet Union.

One of my favorite movie quotes of all time:

Harry Lime (Orsen Wells), in "The Third Man"

"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

Very interesting timing by 10:43 and his/her buddy 11:28. PP's spin machine wouldn't have any reason to sabotage/derail this thread by reporting a false rumor of a Fed bust, would they?

The mateel only sold 400 tickets so far . The new books show no profit from any of there ventures .They just got the books straighted out .idiots

4:59 udderbullshit. It will be just like Summer Arts. The parks people are way cool and always have been.

Tue Jul 15, 06:15:00 PM

Do you people ever stop with the mongering rumors. Tell the whole story and tell who you are or leave it alone.

God the stories I could tell about PP and the previous festivals if I used your idea of integrity. We'd all get busted.

The board and volunteer staff have been going it alone for over a year now. I want to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for bringing us Reggae on the River 2008. I admire your courage, energy, and sense of humor to put up with all this shit and still get the job done. Personally I don't care if just two people show up. They did it! They survived against incredible odds. (I'm sure it will sell out though as all my friends and family are going and that is quite a few heh). My son and his buddies knew and he doesn't even live around here. They are driving up.

Isn't there a $50,000 payment due to be paid on Boot's loan to the MCC coming up very soon? I sure hope that 6:15 was wrong with the 400 tickets sold figure. 6:28 I didn't catch your name so maybe you should follow your own advice.

Mr. Arnoul, you're being hateful again.

KMUD reported this morning during Ken's show that a convoy of feds were headed towards Whitethorn.

Unspecified number of vehicles.

was headed.

ROTR WELCOME BACK!!!! It will be our local community event. What is going on with the settlement? Long live the Mateel, without pp they really are OUR community center. kevin a and kim s are both mean angry nasty old men.

Kevin and Kim aren't even posting here. Kim has been out of town at Oregon Country Fair. Kevin is no doubt working. What's up with this "blame blame blame"?

I hope ROTR is a success, and wish the Mateel all the best. But can't we keep this on a positive note? It seems like the Mateel is trying to do that.

I agree. As the poster said let's pull all our energy energy into helping the Mateel pump their sales. Just by copying the press release off the blog and sending it to ten friends and two radio stations and/or newspapers we can help the volunteers and Justin a lot. I've done marketing I know how it works. last minute word of the mouth is fast by email. They've got to be swamped. Get the Times-standard and Eureka Reporter to put it on their front page or how about the Chron. Yeah that's what I want to see. Finally I feel like I can do something that's helpful. I've been watching for so long feeling useless. Now I can help. I really like that idea.

The Los Angeles Times.

Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
What's the big Portland paper?
Wait what about Ashland They can still make plans and drive
Reggae on the River is alive and well and the Mateel did it.

Ooops those last three are all mine. I got carried away and didn't reread. Sorry.

its reggae find the alternative mags and news send it there

The entire Dimmick site has wireless any one with a laptop can connect. The Mateel probably paid for it.

Its been a tough year for the festivals thus far, due to gas prices being so high. Even the RR is trying incentives to get more sales for their festival. I do believe that they would have been able to sell a few hundred more tickets if the Mateel community wasn't so angry about their loss of income.
As for the rise from the ashes isn't that how ROR started to begin with?
Unfortunately the Benbow isn't nearly as much fun as it used to be. So eat your brownies before you go.

You have 3-days till the show. You're a lot late to try to get coverage in any papers other than local and even that is doubtful. Radio you should have been cultivating that months ago as well as the media. Good luck. I hope you can swim.

OKAY Y
7:47 you need to get a life no one should believe your first paragraph since the second paragraph reflects your true agenda. As a foot soldier for dark forces you must be hidden in all your agendas. Mateel to fail is your mantra. You spin a WEB of deceit, a SITE of legerdemain. You would not give a homeless person a quarter lest you expect it to bring you some measure of return.

I found this posted underneath the Mateels press release: http://blog.synthesis.net/
2008/05/12/reggae-on-the-river-
rising/

Reggae Rising is going strong…
Everyong doubted Reggae Rising would happen last year…. but it was the same staff, same thousands of volunteers, same production company… and the same artists that have always been served well by the production company (too bad the MCC couldn’t compromise!)
Locals call it “Reggae”… like, “Are you going to Reggae this year?” The name hasn’t changed the event.
I can’t wait for Reggae this year!!!! It’s a tradition.
PS. stagolee, that’s pessimistic. We want to celebrate that culture and jam out to reggae! And we want to party with our friends."

Yuck. Can you believe it. Press shit gets so ugly.

A foot soldier for the dark forces?

Can we get any more melodramatic?

Don't answer.

It doesn't matter it is more than covering ticket sales. The idea is to let the public know Reggae on the River is alive and well and hasn't been cancelled forever. That's the message that PP and Scher have been putting out for over a year now.

But nice try at getting people not to even try

Tue Jul 15, 09:33:00 PM

Raped, molested, and the victim of a crime is how I feel. Anger generally is associated with those things.

9:40 thanks for the good vibes it wasn't Mateel staff asking that it was a supporter's idea to make something positive happen

Early this week I called one of the local motels to book a room for Saturday. I told them I wanted a room for the night of Reggae on the River. They said that wasn't until August and they did not know anything about the event at Benbow. I did get the room.

Check out "Warrior King" who I feel is the headliner this Saturday.

jeezus

As far as I'm concerned Reggae is in August.

Kim has been out of town at Oregon Country Fair.

On tuesday? shuuuuuurrrrrrre

It is so nice that Mateel members are so determined to heal the community's differeneces.

Really? Anon Wed Jul 16, 08:32:00 AM you have been brain washed and obviously can't read.

Heal the community??? Just take a look at all of the hate the MCC, ilks like you and Eric Kirk have perpetuated through this blog.

Maybe I've missed something but nowhere have I read or heard from any of you martyrs, or the MCC BOD words of love and respect nor have I seen you accept or acknowledge any of the hard working crew who built ROTR in to a world class event.

You don't welcome any of the elders of the show. Instead you view them as spies and thieves. Heal the community's differences??? When, where and how??? You have people like Tofu, Margie, Anna Banana and Eric Kirk leading the hate brigade.

(sigh). Another productive reggae discussion.

I wish that settlement agreement would solidify and come out already. this passes the better for everybody. It's probably being held up over the proper choice of a conjunction in the severability clause or something stupid.

Wed Jul 16, 10:36:00 AM

Sorry to hear you feel this way. I suggest you get on the peace train along with the good folks at the Mateel. As many coordinators will tell you they thought they were working for the Mateel all those years. Others on the inside knew what was going on and just kept to their own business. Then there is the denial group. I understand why and how they arrived at their opinions and I am happy they have so much love in their hearts for the people they work with to want to believe them and support them in any circumstance. I am not posting here to take that away from you. But I will say I believe there is a high road to take here and to do that the sense of being entitled to another's property simply by association needs to be reviewed by all. If you build a home for someone else do you stand in their yard twenty years later and demand to be acknowledged time and time again for your work. I can tell you that the Mateel was repeatedly told to shut up and go away and not bother the coordinators because they were hated and no one wanted to hear from the Mateel. The Mateel did what they were asked to do out of respect for the production company. Just put the money on the table and leave and give us anything we want immediately was the message, over and over again, but don't ask for any thing in return. We pay you your money what else could you possibly want? Then down on site at least some people were told how horrible the Mateel treated the coordinators and crew and how they didn't do anything for them. I'll leave you to surmise the end of the info you got and which parties were untruthful. That is your opinion. I have mine. But there is a bus or a train or whatever you want to call it to get on here now before the opportunity is crushed forever to leave this behind and build a better community and Mateel in the future. No one is going to forget but at least we can all act like we have matured into responsible thinking adults. The person(s) guilty of duping the community will continue to do so I imagine depending on the settlement. It is up to you now whether or not you want to call peace or continue to be their play toy. Best wishes to you whatever you believe.

I am not any better than you at this and I have felt incredible rage at times. I am taking my own advice. Time to move on. My heart and service is to the Mateel and always will be.

Um make that I am moving on right after that post.

It is hard to let go. Help me. Get on the peace train and I will follow.

If being an elder gives you a crystal ball then Obama should listen to Cheney, Bush Sr., and Rove.

I wish they had broadcast the trial over KMUD. Why didn't People's people stay for the parts other than their own story telling?

A play Hey we can do a play. Get those transcripts and have actors read the parts on air. Zoooom go the ratings. Reggae Warrior can be the judge. Kevin Arnoul as Carol with a deep voice. Anna as Knowles. Can we get her to cross dress? Heh.

Come on people its a joke. Oh yeah no satire on the web. I forgot. Bad me

Jah mon

Boy, oh boy!! Way to hold on to an issue!
Now let's use that same tenacity to grab hold of the real problems in our community: the uncertain fate of Humboldt Bay, the sorry state of our schools, the proposal to levy a fee for firefighting that would go to CalFire rather than our local VFDs, renegade code enforcement and million-dollar Keystone Cops (er, FBI) raids accomplishing little more than the further undermining of our civil rights....
Is it because we feel so powerless against in the face of these larger concerns that we indulge ourselves by posturing against our neighbors?

It is because our town is corrupt and so is the county government.

Human nature at it's worst.

10:36:00 AM said: You have people like Tofu, Margie, Anna Banana and Eric Kirk leading the hate brigade.

Personal attacks? How well you model words of love and respect.

Tofu, Margie, (we know you by your taunts..) Anna, and Eric, have, and continue to tell their truth as they experienced it. Anna's letter to the editor this week was right on. PREDATORY BUSINESS PRACTICES> The experiences of the BOD/MCC are not imaginary or hippie dreams lost. It has been many years of dure$$. Until the event was ...ultimately... well.. you know.

Listen, calling a spade a spade is not a hate brigade. It is the truth brigade.

Keep trying. Maybe it is time to expand your emotive palette. There are some that care about fairness, honor, and integrity. It raises concern (and voices) when the health of the community is threatened by acts of low integrity and outright lies. (same show new name. that - among other things -was so wrong.) It doesn't mean they hate you. Sorry, but until society disintegrates completely, you will just have to put up with voices of conscience.

11:34:00 AM pegged it. Try to read it carefully. The longtime "builders of reggae" of which there are many, on both sides,! were all conpen$ated, and loved up duly.

guess what? There is no eternal praise flame. That is the one you must kindle on your own with God, and the Angels.

Happy soul searching.

LONG LIVE THE MATEEL and REGGAE ON THE RIVER!

JUST GO!

Really "Just Go" Bye Bye

Infantile response.

Yup.

Will you be posting a Reggae Rising Music Festival being held the first weekend in August thread like you have posted a RotR press release? You know, something to stir up the readership?

Funny, we never needed postings, or posters, or promotional gimics like one day passes, when the "event" was Reggae on the River...hmmmmm. Garberville is absolutely plastered with posters. There are print and radio ads. Too bad about the financial failure, now that the heart has been torn from Reggae.

Will you be posting a Reggae Rising Music Festival being held the first weekend in August thread like you have posted a RotR press release? You know, something to stir up the readership?

Normally I limit announcement postings to nonprofit events, but I'll be happy to post a promotion if they send me one. But PP hasn't made it a habit to send me press releases. I have to go find them or I'm accused of unfairness.

I'm waiting for the RR half day passes and senior discounts.

Eric,
Wait for RR to send you the information on their for profit event. Why give a for profit event FREE advertisement?

Don't worry Rex White's fantastic video footage of RR should be enough to perk sales of RR. He bought the equipment to use at ROR of course. It is really the music and video rights behind that festival that is worth gold.

Maybe at one point the music and video rights were worth gold.

If they can't even sell out the three day event and are offering 1 day admissions, where does that leave the non profit, profits?

if Reggae on the River at Benbow has sold less than 1000 tickets, and it is a one-day event, where does that leave their 50 vendors booths?

Standing on principle

Standing on principle

Thu Jul 17, 08:46:00 PM"

right. all of those vendors want to gamble the money to have a booth, just to "stand on a principle."

I wish them well, hope they are carpooling, and hope the booth fees were not too high.... and that plenty of people come to the show, to purchase stuff from the vendors.

I think if Kim is capable of posting pictures of the day he's capable of posting here.

Not all that glitters is gold. Karma is sweet poison that takes its own sweeter time.

margie you're a bitch

Kim, you have blog breath.

Margaret you're a bitch and Kim is a sweetheart

Those that dis Margaret must fear powerful women, because she is one.

More spin.

WOW now that's funny. Margie a powerful women??? Yeah right. Don't worry I'm sure whoever doesn't like Margie most definitely doesn't fear her. You all think WAY to highly of yourselves.

You all think WAY to highly of yourselves.

Remember, when you point at another, you have three fingers pointing back at yourself. Yep, that seems about right.

Dream on. Not buying the MCC company line. The only thing you're good for is a laugh.

See you at Reggae Rising!

Support Non Profits of your choice on an individual basis. You do not need to attend an over priced for profit event to do so. Give all or part of the $175.00+ ticket directly to a non profit.

reggae what? I thought reggae happened last week. what a great party too, i'm topped up on reggae vibes.

Reggae on the River will live forever in our hearts and minds.
I can't think of any new show that will ever compare.
Last weekend was a new beginning for Reggae on the River and the commUNITY.

Amen 2 that.
