It means you don't have enough to do during the day.

Jim Truitt-- you rock!! Even a dweeb like me understand the differences between the general plans a-b-c. I actually like a the best. I remember when the drive from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe has lots of open space, farm and ag land. My frinds in Cameron Park said that "development" would never connect the rural oulying areas. Well, 10 years later, the drive from Sac to Tahoe is connected by development. Houses, Malls, big boxes, etc... It is gross. I don't want Humboldt County to end up like this in 10 years. PLEASE vote for the most qualified, thoughtful, sincere, honest person, Clif Clendenen.

I got this in an email and wanted to pass it on.

if estelle really cared about southern humboldt, she woulda voted in the harbor commission race, insteada bein' at a meeting. if she really cared about sohum, she never woulda allowed the theft of rotr, and been such a huge part of the divide.

ppeople behind estelle still. instead of paying clint warner, they should pay the MCC.

Jim Truitt-- you crock!

It's fine for truit to be for plan A just like cliff because they live in town. They are preservationists and want to be the "last pioneers" and close the door behind them.
They got what they wanted now everybody else can go live in an apartment in town(if you can find one)

hey! don't ridicule my sign-counting! i drove around that little (friendly) town for 20 minutes counting signs and you don't believe me or are trying to spin it? whatever, thats the count (tho i probably only saw half of them)...

what it means to me is that clif and joho are fighting it out up north while clif muscles into estelle's numbers down here--its going to be close, si?...

i told estelle the other day that i think she's probably the best candidate but no sohum liberal has done it in the past, witness ED's 17% (or was it 23?) back in '92 or whenever...

trolls, your move...

(meaning anyone who doesn't believe me or disses me is a troll...ok, shit i'm a troll at heart and manana that Clif sign goes up on Sprowl Cr Rd!!!(well, Jojo wouldn't be so bad...)

Go OBAMA!

Hey this sounds like it's gonna be a FUN Party.
I saw Clint Warner play before ....he is really really good. I think he must know every song in the book.
That is one party my family will not miss.
Estelle has a great bunch of people on her campaign, and they know how to throw a party.

witness ED's 17% (or was it 23?) back in '92 or whenever...

ask ed about that and he will tell you that he did not walk or campaign in Fortuna and did not knock on one door to engage the voters. I still voted for ed tho.

Ed may not have walked Fortuna's neighbors, but Sal Steinberg did. And Estelle did in the spring.

Why is Estelle holding her victory party in Fortuna? She hasn't even won yet and she's abandoning Southern Humboldt.

I listened on the radio and I heard the debate at the Vets hall. cliff definitely came out for Plan A.
Estelle and johanna came out for plan b. Even tho I have heard johanna say she was for plan c.

Estelle was very clear. She said she does not support Plan A. Plan A is the most restrictive in terms of land use planning. Estelle said she supports having the infrastructure for people that want to live in towns, but wants the general plan to protect our right to live in the country and build our homes.I have heard her go into great detail about this at one of her town hall meetings.

I also know that she was the only one that stood up for us re: the code enforcement tactics. She gave testimony a few times at the task force meetings.

Estelle has my Vote. I know she will be there for us and keep us informed.

estelle is the best candidate...

but she can't win...

well, maybe she will...surprise me...

hmmm...

we can dream...but...

its all a game...

Can you not read? Estelle has invited everyone to her southern Humboldt office (Madrone Realty in G'ville) as well on Election day, from noon - 4pm.
You should drop by. I see that Estelle's team will be serving refreshments. It should be a fun day.

They did that last June on Election day where people floated in and out all day after they voted.

saying Estelle can't win is just a political strategy by her opponents to try and get you to vote for cliff.

They even say that there's 11,000 voters in fortuna and only 5,000 voters in southern humboldt. So therefore don't even think about casting a ballot for your local candidate cause youre outnumbered so there fore settle for 2nd best and vote for clif.

Those numbers are completely BOGUS.

Here are the facts. In the 2nd district there are almost 15,000 REGISTERED voters.

That does not mean that they all VOTE!
Last June of the 15,000.... only 8,000 voted.

There are 7,000 REGISTERED voters in Fortuna but only 3,000 of them EVER VOTE. The rest of the votes are spread out throughout the district and the outlying areas.

5,000 of them are from southern Humboldt.

Inform yourselves people and by the way Vote for the most qualified.
That would be Estelle Fennell.

hey people this is a completely different election,
there will only be 2 names on the ballot.
there is only a remote chance for the write in candidate to be successful.
the voter turnout will be huge, which totally benefits Estelle Fennel.
lots of democrats coming out to vote for obama and by the way they will be voting for Estelle who got the endorsement of the dem. central committee too.

reporter, nov 5: so estelle, now that you've given the election to johanna how do you feel about that?

answer:...???

You people down there can stop arguing about this. Johanna's support is wide and deep. Everybody in the district knows how to fill out the ballot by now. And she will get more than fifty percent, so you can stop pointing fingers at each other. It was never in doubt.

Vote Republican this fall, vote McCain, vote yes on Measure 8, vote for Rodoni

Vote to keep America in the right hands

Rodoni supports Prop. 8. That's why she gets my vote.

reporter, nov 5: so estelle, now that you've won what do you have to say to the negatarians.

Oh pay no tention to them, they are a penny a doz

Negartarians? I hope our reporters have better grammar than that!

Eric wrote a letter to the beacon.

In Southern Humboldt being qualified translates to being sober and having at least ten lights going successfully.

Why no applesauce?

Johanna gonna win!

Estelle will be a THIRD PLACE WINNER.

Oh sure. Go celebrate Estelle losing with her People's Productions friends. Just what I want to do on a night where I want to celebrate President Obama's win. Sure I want to be with a bunch of losing Peopleistas. Yeah, that's the ticket. Is Estelle going to pay for this little shindig with Mateel money?

it is so tiring to hear you ppeople talk about restrictive growth. plan a(which the question was put at one of the debates to answer about the general plan with only one letter)Clif has been saying A-B+ all along. but the one letter only responded to the question that was asked. if you live along the Mattole, or another watershed, do you really want or need more growth? More people taking precious water? this is now the estellefish propaganda fear tactic that "no one can live in the hills anymore, OMG!".. get real, look at the plans for yourself.i personally would like plan a as i live in a watershed. but i like clifs idea of an a-b combination. vote clif, vote for watersheds being protected, vote for rural-hill living that will be developed with an eye to the future of our watersheds and our environment. VOTE CLIF--he rocks!

Why is Estelle trying so hard to look like a cowboy?

no applesauce?

Well, no applesauce, but he's got cider, but where's this cider from? From Clif's press release Feb 8, 2008 Clif Clendenen, owner of Clendenen's Cider Works in Fortuna and candidate for Humboldt County Second District supervisor, completed his 30th successful season this week. Clendenen grew and processed 36 tons of apples to produce more than 5,500 gallons of fresh apple cider, all sold at his Fortuna business.

I surf the web,and it makes me wonder: Karl Oehlman, Oehlman Vineyard

Karl farms Pinot Noir on his Ranch overlooking the Russian River Valley. Our Pinot comes from the steepest part of his hillside block where the crop yields are the lowest. Karl also farms apples which go up to Fortuna California to Clendenen Cider Works (coincidentally John Clendenen's family's cider operation).

OK. So as long as his apples are sprayed he's probably not breaking any laws, but I'm curious now about how much of the apples that Clif squeezes into juice come from wine country and elsewhere?

And then I look at his older brother John, who has a vineyard in Healdsburg, and also has a rapidly expanding Clendenen Vineyard Management Llc that is now bringing in $4.6 million/year with 60 employees. John was past president of Sonoma County Winegrape Commission.

The Sonama County growers are dependent on diverted Eel River water, as are many others along the Russian River.

Now I'm puzzled. Again, looking back at old press releases, Clif says he intends to work hard to restore ALL of the flow back to the Eel River. An early press release: He is also an
active advocate for the restoration of the regions's rivers, with protection of salmon and steelhead habitats and water flows restored to their natural levels.

Clif says he intends to work hard to take back ALL of the Eel Rivers diverted water to the Russian River.

This is an extreme stance, that completely leaves out the generations of families and businesses on the Russian River that are dependent on this water. (Where have I seen that before, Clif ignoring stakeholders who so obviously have rights?) This kind of position is sure to fail.

Now I understand the very close relationship of Clif and his brother’s families, and the business connections that Clif has with winegrape growers in Sonoma county who supply Clif with apples.

And I already know that Clif has never truly done work restoring the Eel River as he claims, nor is a progressive or environmentalist as others have falsely claimed.

This is incredible! Clif would never ever rip the carpet from those he loves, and those he relates to with and profits from who live along the Russian River. After all, Clif's family vacations here, and swims in the Russian River with these folks.

A very reasonable conclusion is that Clif is indeed a liar: he has no intention at all of doing what he said.

So here we have Clif who misrepresents his apples and juice as local Clendenen grew and processed 36 tons of apples, and hoodwinks the locals “...and water flows restored to their natural levels”. Many of these people have worked hard for good and were obviously unaware of these things when they agreed to support Clif.

Clif has no credibility. People, please wake up!

Oh my ******* God.

Get an education and do us all a favor.

If you shut down everyone and anyone to the pure local thing no one, but those working in the underground economy, will have jobs. You don't live in an isolated island. Do you have any idea how many of those vendors you love to frequent at the groovy local festivals use thread, paints, wood, plastics, and fabric produced outside the walls of Humboldt County and sell it as local products? Do you want to be the one spinning the wool or running a factor that produces fabric locally. Not to mention that if you brought such industries as this into Humboldt County you'd all attack them for being unclean! Fine. There are only so many apples that can be grown in Humboldt County on land that for years has been priced out of site because of the underground economy--Clif would be an idiot to use extensive land for apple production when it could be used more economically for other purposes. You people need to get out of your basement and learn about the real economy and what makes it turn. Get a real business, ditch the grow, and quit throwing darts at the people who are trying to do good. Clif isn't going to interrupt your way of life why do you want to bag on his? ******* hypocrites. You want to put your pristine lifestyle up for examination. I bet you have never purchased something outside of Humboldt right. You can emphasize the local shit but tying someone down in chains to a specific thing like that will kill the business. Please at least use economic sense above the level of the 6th grade adult moron. I have to live in this county too.

Humboldt County is not an island. It is attached to California like it or not. Like it or not it will grow. Like it or not the natural beauty will attract more people to live here. Eventually if you push your radical end of buy local and environmentalism too hard there will be a backlash and people will ignore you. Moderation is the key. You want someone in government that understands why buying local and why caretaking the environment should be priorities but that you have to find a balance between extremes or you end up with crap for government polarized on one end or another. If you don't believe me take a look at our national model of government. It works similar on local levels. A democracy isn't about putting the other guys in chains and locking them away in steamer trunks. It is about building a consensus between all points of views to arrive at something we can all live, work, and play with. Johanna appears to be on one end of an extreme and Estelle on the other. Clif is the moderate who can tie a consensus together. It just makes sense to reasonable people who want a good solid long term government to vote for Clif... regardless of his apples or how much hair or how tall or whether or not he goes to church. You have to have a 360 viewpoint to do the job and he has it.

Since you already know what Clif is thinking and doing while you are at it could you tell me how Google stocks will perform over the next ten years. I don't have any one with crystal balls around me right now. Thanks.

Estelle is nothing more than a former radio celebrity.
She has NO business experience which includes balancing a budget!

4:16 is in response to 3:11 just to clear things up a bit.

Someone here brings up some relevant questions about Clif's credibility and honesty, based on Clif's Campaign statements, and provide references, and they are called morons and uneducated by the Clif folks.

Then the conversation is steered to a host of mercantile concerns, ok, but not even relevant to the concerns.

No response about Clif representing his apples as having been grown in Fortuna, where they apparently are not.

No response about Clif's extreme conflict of interest in regards to the future of the Eel river.

Will Clif please respond? How many apples from where? Why would you take all Eel water away from your family, friends, and associates on the Russian River?

And Eric, did Nada really give you the authority to speak her mind? Why doesn't Nada help straighten this out?

Or Shit Stirring!

4:44 it is precisely your failure to see the big picture problems of the county that were the basis of the OH MY GOD post. And you still don't get it.

Those are valid concerns? How? In what way does this impact Clif's ability to do the job. Calling him a liar is a smear unless you are going to present evidence on all sides of the issues including Clif's.

Nice try but you can't bury it under the rug. If you truly believe your rhetoric then why not bring into the fray the corruption issues that have been posted against other candidates? Under your minimal rules for what is important wouldn't that be equally important and valid to discuss here?

Dogma is dogma and like it or not you got called out on it.

Estelle's supporters have been known to enjoy fighting battles with character assassination.

Maybe they will be practicing a little character assassination at the loser celebration with PP at the loser headquarters Tuesday night while I'm celebrating with President Obama.

Eric wrote a letter to the beacon.

Yeah, they actually published it. I sent it to the dailies, and neither of them published it. I've never had a letter to the editor rejected before, except by the North Coast Journal because they don't have the space to publish all the election campaign letters.

Sorry 9:20. Again, you can't make that kind of post against a private person anonymously. It's just not fair.

And really, 3:11, you've got way to much time on your hands. There is no vineyard maffia connection. When Clif says he wants to save the Eel River, he means it.

So Clif is going to come down heavy on 2nd District homesteaders, huh, Eric, for taking too much water and polluting what little water they leave? Boy, you got to commend Clif on that one. It takes guts to take a real stand to protect our local rivers.

Vote Clif.

clif is toast--there are only so many lib votes and they're getting split...

clif is toast--there are only so many lib votes and they're getting split...

Eric, Clif says he will work hard to take back ALL of the Eel River water that has been for over 100 years now, and is still being diverted to the Russian River.

Clif's longtime family, friends, and business associates (vendors)live along the Russian River. They are dependent on, and profit from the water from the Eel River.

Now you say When Clif says he wants to save the Eel River, he means it. Again, Clif said much more than. On his campaign statements and website, he said he would work hard to take back ALL of the Eel River water from the Russian River.

How can this possibly be?

I wonder if his family, friends, Farm Bureau members, and business associates in Sonoma County are aware of this betrayal(wink)?

Yeah, I read it the first time. It was nitpicking then. It hasn't improved with age.

OK, then what part of plan a does Kathleen find laughable? Why did she not dispute any of Jim Truitts facts about plans a-b-c-? She only spoke in terms of more fear tactics. Why? So many people in southern humboldt think they are so different, so much better, that no one else on the planet can possibly understand the way you live. Well, maybe a New Yorker couldn't, but there are other people out there who are as aware as you, and there are people out there who are much more aware than all of you put together. You are pretty intolerant as a group of people to anything that is "outside".

Well, maybe a New Yorker couldn't

We actually have quite a few New Yorkers here, my wife included. Jana lived in Connecticut for much of her life and had never met anyone born in Doctor's Hospital in NYC. She moved here and met three.

But she does not support Estelle..... Or does she? Oh, oh.

The Cliftones. I gotta be there for that one!!!!

No. Jana supports Clif. She's done plenty of baking for his events.

You are pretty intolerant as a group of people to anything that is "outside"

Have you even read Plan A ?
Plan A is the most restrictive for regular folks who own land in the country. It will threaten our ability to build/renovate our homes. It seems as though the people who wrote plan A did not take input from any one who lives on the land. Only town people seem to have had a place at the table.
Plan A will not only adversly affect the 2nd district but ALL of Humboldt county rural residents.

Has anyone noticed how much cliff's hair color matches his teeth?

My kid was the first to notice. "Hey look, this guys' teeth matches his hair color"

Well, it's been awhile since I've read anything directly, but my understanding is that plan A would not impact existing subdivisions except to prevent further subdividing. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the county apparently hasn't made the update plans available online. Here's the planning library. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cliff continues to use non organic methods on his farm his methods add to our health costs in Humboldt . Have you fed his products to your kids Eric? That would be a sure way of showing your support for cliff by feeding his non organic apples to your kids it might be a good photo op .One more of the good ole boy mentality from the north

Eric V. Kirk said.
Wed May 14, 05:14:00 PM..
I have fed his products to my kids actually. While I support organic produce, I do not always buy organic. I can't always afford it. And besides I'm not convinced of the dangers of conventional crops to the consumer except in certain cases. I would not buy conventional strawberries for instance. It depends on the crop and more particularly what is being used. The fact is that the amounts of pesticides which are residual by the time they get to market are very often not detectable. I buy organic primarily for considerations of water runoff from the farms themselves.

Clif employs an fungicide to address a problem specific to Humboldt County which would cut well into his yield. Organic produce is more expensive precisely because of the impact on yield.

And again, if you're going to insist on a litmus test of hippie culture based political correctness in your candidates, you're going to come up empty in the Second District every time. Ease up a bit on the elitism, and people will listen to you.Organic produce is more expensive precisely because of the impact on yield.

The point is, Clif uses a fungicide, that's all. It's enough to keep his apples from being designated organic. But it doesn't make his apples a health risk....

Eric, obviously you were clueless that many or most of the apples that Clif juices come from orchards down in Sonoma County. These are commercial orchards, and they are sprayed heavily to control coddling moth (which Clif also likely sprays for on his own apples, in addition to fungicides) and apple maggot . These pesticides are much stronger, and different than fungicides, with well-known dangers and residues, and Clif in reality has no idea of what these tons of apples have been sprayed with.

You misrepresented Clif’s apple products to calm concerned parents: You said Clif has some control over what and how much pesticides are used, so feel comforted and feed his juice to your children. That’s right...you didn’t know, and neither did most of Clif’s endorsers and supporters.

And I suspect some parents have done just that - upped their families intake of Clif’s juice to help out Clif.

Clif could have set the record straight at any time. Damage already done, what more to come?

Honesty? Integrity? My ass.

The moral of the story is that Apple farmers should stop using anything on their apples so their is only enough supply to meet the needs of the really wealthy people who will be able to pay the high prices when there isn't enough supply.

The alternative moral of the story is don't buy it. It is much easier that way and you don't get to control the market for everyone else.

Risk the health of the trees that take years to grow.

Wow. Estelle has Karl Rove in her camp.

Does Clif have Bill Ayers connections too?

So 6:52, exactly what pesticides are used on these apples down in that nasty old Sonoma County?

Don't fall for sleazy underhanded campaign attacks. Vote for Clif!

Kathleen aka Karl Rove

Kathleen will be the one supporter who will make Estelle's bid for 2nd district supervisor unsuccessful.

Marianne Odisio said... Thu May 15, 07:30:00 AM Yes, it can sometimes be expensive to buy organic , but when it comes to the health of my child, I don't consider it to be a minor issue... and in spite of any attempts to marginalize this issue as a "litmus test of hippie culture", all it takes is a little unbiased research and you will find that non-organic apples are among the crops most contaminated when it comes to comparing "conventional" vs. organic.
I raised my son as a single mom and I didn't have much problem seeking out organic foods/juices for him. I'm sure that if it could be accomplished on my meager income, anyone can judiciously chose organic products and stay within a budget.
At one point I did stop into the Clenenden factory farm outlet when my son was around 4 (12 or so years ago), and when I inquired about any organic juice being available, they looked at me as if I'd just flown in from another planet.

To you it may be nothing more than a hippie culture thing, but it pisses me off that you misled people about what they were feeding their children!

...........................

At least they're labeled honestly as coming from China.

Everyone thinks Clendenen cider comes from Clif's apples in Fortuna, and he has never said anything otherwise.

Eric even said they did to calm people's fears.

In China they are arresting people for falsely representing their products.

Eric, you could at least say you're sorry.

Clif.....................!

I agree with Marianne Eric...this is an important issue.

Okay. If you say so.

Jeez Eric.......the evidence shows you don't know this Clif very well!

Any one seen the movie Humboldt County yet? It certainly helps to explain where these people get some of their ideas from in southern Humboldt. Yes, I want to elect a board supervisor on the basis of what he sprays on his apples or doesn't. That is just a great idea. That type of mentality got us Bush and Cheney and now you want to push it onto your kids. Keep it up so hum and pretty soon when pot is legalized you'll be guaranteed a ghost town right in your own backyard. The 60's Appalachia of America.

I quite frankly do not believe Marianne Odioso that Clendenen looked at her like she was from another planet. They are more aware than that, and have been. When Marianne worked at Murrish/Shop Smart, she did not eat or purchase 100% organic. The fungicide that is sprayed on apples, one time, is at fruit set, that's it. You guys are picking at threads, clutching at straws. Johanna will steam roll this election, and it's estelles fault.

Jeez Eric.......the evidence shows you don't know this Clif very well!

What the evidence shows is that someone supporting either Estelle or Johanna has constructed a very convoluted lame basis for attacking his character and business. It's cheap and beneath any of the three candidates.

Most all of the WINE served at Estelle's fundraisers use chemicals and sulphates in the production of their product.
Drink up.
